FULL-TIME OUTREACH COORDINATOR/ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR

Join us at Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park as our full-time Outreach Coordinator/ Environmental Educator. This position focuses on our community outreach tasks while being an essential member or our environmental education staff.

We are looking for an outgoing and energetic team member who will help us in our mission by increasing the visibility of our high quality, engaging programs that are crafted to inspire people to become better caretakers of our environment.

 Working closely with our Executive Director, Education staff, and Board of Directors, the Outreach Coordinator/Environmental Educator will:

 (1) take the lead in our community outreach including social media, partner collaboration, and the planning and delivery of public and community events,

(2) work with our volunteer corps to oversee their meetings and to coordinate their volunteer services in support of our mission, and

(3) oversee the stewardship efforts in support of our partners’ trail and conservation projects.

Job Responsibilities:

 The Outreach Coordinator/Environmental Educator works with the rest of the staff to develop, deliver, and promote our environmental education programs and to accomplish the associated administrative work. The outreach component of the job involves working with community partners, our volunteers, networking with other organizations, and with others to promote our programs and our mission through marketing and social media efforts.

 The position includes the following:

 ●       Teaching educational programs in outdoor conditions and in traditional classroom settings for toddlers to adult audiences at Wilton Wildlife and in community settings;

●       Working with the Education Coordinator in the development of new programs, promotional materials, and media, and assisting in the preparation, cleanup, and proper storage of program activity materials;

●       Promoting public programs through flyers, press releases, social media, and our eNewsletter;

●       Participating in the planning, preparation, and implementation of events, such as the Moonlight Hikes, Campfire Chats, Winter Recreational Rentals, and the Wildlife Festival;

●       Managing the volunteer corps, maintaining lists of volunteers and hours worked, and planning and running the monthly volunteer meetings;

●       Coordinating volunteer participation in school group and public programs; Karner blue butterfly restoration efforts (e.g., seed collecting and lupine planting); Citizen Science studies (e.g.: American woodcock, Frog Watch USA); trail stewardship; and administrative and fundraising tasks;

●       Registering program attendees and sending confirmation emails to registrants;

●       Doing trail work, including winter grooming.

●       Handling animals as part of the instruction and assisting with their care during the week;

Position Qualifications 

  1. A BA/BS in Environmental Education, Education, Environmental Studies/Science, Biology, Sustainability, Conservation, or related field is preferred. Other fields may be considered.

  2. Experience in program promotion and working with community groups.  

  3. Strong communication skills including public speaking, writing, editing, and comfort and experience in delivering public presentations in small and large group settings.

  4. Proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Canva, Squarespace, and social media platforms.

  5. Two years teaching experience, or equivalent, in a classroom or in the field of environmental education is preferred.

  6. Must be outgoing, flexible, and enjoy working with a team in a creative environment possessing excellent organization, collaboration, and time management skills. Must be able to work on multiple tasks and provide high attention to detail.

  7. Available for weekend or evening work.

  8. Ability to work in a variety of conditions and locations. This position requires year-round outdoor work including, but not limited to, leading interpretive hikes, lifting tables and supplies, and walking on trails with mixed terrain. Some programs involve working with and handling live animals. Programs also take place indoors in locations around the region. Administrative tasks take place on a computer.

  9. A valid driver license and a dependable motor vehicle (mileage for work purposes will be reimbursed).

The position is year-round, 40 hours per week. The work week varies seasonally, and flexibility of working hours is essential. Some remote work is allowed. This is a salaried position of $38,600 to $41,000/year, based on the candidate’s experience. Benefits include paid time off, paid holidays, and health insurance if needed. The specific start date is flexible; however, we are looking to fill the position as soon as possible. A background check is required.
